While cuddling with my kitty last night, I was just thinking about relationships between pets and humans. In a world where so many people have become desensitized to almost everything, it is refreshing to see love in any form. But there is just something special about the love between a human and their pet. As I was holding my cat, she was looking up at me as if I was her entire world. I thought here is this little cat that had been found on the side of the road in a box with her mama and 4 other siblings. Some kind person rescued them and took them to the local shelter where my daughter was volunteering. She took one look at my “Emma” and knew that she belonged with me. I have to say she was most certainly right. She is a little fur ball of fun and weirdness…and she is so much company to me. She came into my life at a time when I had started a brand new job, both of my children had left the nest, and my husband was on the road all the time. I was lonesome to say the least. Little did I know how much my life would change in the next year. My parents moved in with us and then within 5 months my Mom passed away. Once again, I was lonesome in a way that I cannot even describe. The hole in my heart was deep and very painful. No one knew the nights I laid in bed and cried…and sometimes still do…no one except Emma. Always, as if she knew why I was hurting, she would lay next to me and lay her head on my shoulder and lay her little paws across my chin. Just loving me. Helping me cry. Being my forever friend. And that is something money can not buy. Relationships with animals can change lives, they can save lives, and they always, always make humans better people.
